Virginia residents have no doubt read about Hollywood high asset divorce cases that drag on for months or even years. Both parties wind up fighting over every detail of the divorce, including alimony, child support and child custody. But, it is not every day that a high asset Hollywood divorce ends with one of the spouses walking away from millions of dollars in potential compensation.
Gwen Stefani, recording superstar and coach on the NBC hit show, The Voice, has finalized her divorce from her former husband, rocker, Gavin Rossdale. The couple, who were married in 2003, has three children and has been separated since last November.
Rossdale and Stefani's divorce is rather unusual for an affluent couple. They did not have a prenuptial agreement in place. Therefore, under California law, Rossdale was entitled to 50 percent of everything that was acquired during his marriage to Stefani, including Stefani's earnings as a recording artist.
According to sources though, Rossdale did not seek to get a percentage of her money that she made from CD sales and concerts. He has instead agreed to leave Stefani the lion's share of her earnings from their marriage.
The couple has also agreed to a 50/50 joint child custody arrangement. Nonetheless, Rossdale will probably have the children a greater percentage of the time since Stefani films The Voice in New York and frequently tours. Incredibly, Rossdale did not ask the divorce judge for child support, even though it was within his rights.
As exemplified by this example, a high asset divorce does not have to result in a fight over every last penny. Any Virginia resident who is going through this type of divorce may want to speak to a high asset divorce attorney to develop effective strategies for asset distribution.
