Military divorce rate at its lowest since 2005

Residents of Alexandria City, Virginia, understand that because of their work conditions, military service members lead a different lifestyle than civilians. Although they may face similar issues as a civilian in their lifetime, such as divorce, child custody, spousal support, child support and employment-related problems, their disputes may need to be resolved according to the provisions of military law.

According to a Defense Department statistics, the divorce rate of military service members dropped again last year and now stands at its lowest point since 2005. In the year 2014, the military divorce rate was at 3.1 percent, slightly higher than the divorce rate of 3 percent in 2005. The data includes officers as well as enlisted men and women.

This new statistics also shows that the divorce rate of military service members has been steadily decreasing since 2011, when it stood at 3.7 percent. The divorce rate in 2001, when the Iraq and Afghanistan wars began, was 2.6 percent. The report stated that the major drop in the divorce rate among married female military service members is the main reason for decline in the divorce rate.

The statistics also suggest that over the last year the divorce rate among male military service personnel dropped only by 0.3 percent and only 0.5 percent since 2011. However, there has been steady decline in the divorce rate among female military service members over that period, and since 2011 it steadily has come down from 8 percent to 6.5 percent last year.

The biggest divorce rate decline has happened among married female Marines. While in the year 2011 9.5 percent of female Marines-enlisted and officers-got divorced, the number stood at 6.2 percent last year. Although the divorce rate between civilian and military service members cannot be compared accurately because of differences in tracking methodology, the civilian divorce rate as of 2011 as per most recent data is about 3.6 percent.
