How does Virginia help keep track of child support payments?

If child support payments are ordered by a family court in Virginia after a divorce, the state's Department of Social Services will make sure that these payments are made on time and that they are correctly accounted for. But since these payments can take place over many years, it can be difficult to keep an accurate accounting of them. So, how does the state help the parent who pays child support keep track of these payments?

Simply put, the DSS's Division of Child Support Enforcement creates a document for everyone who pays child support entitled a statement of account. Each SOA is specific for one individual who has been identified as a payer of child support. The document is issued quarterly and provides the payer with critical child support information.

The top section of the SOA lists the date of the statement as well as information about what district office sent the statement. On the top right hand side of the statement is plainly displayed a case number that is specific to the payer's divorce as well as a reference number that the CSE uses to identify this case.

The next section of the document lists the name and address of the payer. This is followed by a large rectangular box that lists the beginning child support balance and all of the payments or adjustments that have been made throughout the last quarter. Any adjustments that appear on the statement are followed by a four letter code which is explained in another part of the statement.

The next area in the SOA is a payment coupon that the non-custodial parent can use to send in their payment. However, any Virginia resident who is new to paying child support may want to speak with a child support attorney in order to find out what additional information is provided in the SOA.
