More couples file for divorce in January

Are you thinking about getting divorced now that the holidays are over? If so, you're not alone. January typically sees the most divorce filings out of any month in the year, and this year shouldn't be any different.

Why do more couples file for divorce in January? January sees more divorce filings for several reasons. One of the reasons is that many couples who are thinking about getting divorced wait until after the holidays are over, especially if they have children.

Many people think about their relationships during the holidays and take time to reflect on their lifestyle. If they are unhappy or dissatisfied with their marriage, some people want to start fresh in the new year by filing for divorce in January.

Another reason couples wait to get divorced is for financial considerations. It may be more beneficial to wait until the new year before filing for divorce because it can impact your financial accounts and tax returns for 2013. Filing your tax returns during a divorce can be complicated so it is important to consider the impact divorce will have on your tax returns.

There are many reasons couples decide to get divorced, but reports show that more couples file for divorce in January. Individuals and couples thinking about getting divorce should consider the impact it will have on their family and finances.

What are some the considerations individuals should make when thinking about divorce? Your property and assets will be divided between you and your ex so it is important to know what accounts and property are considered marital property and how they might be divided. It is also important to consider who may be required to pay alimony and how much.

Another big consideration is child custody. Couples with children should think about how their children will be impacted by divorce and understand what steps they can take to reduce the negative impact it may have on their life.
